2018 Audi A1 First Drive – Audi A1 is scheduled to be refreshed in 2018, and we have been peeking the car in testing for the first time.
Audi is preparing to deliver the Audi A1 hatchback thoroughly, with the second-generation model coming in 2018 – and our spy photographer has given us a quick overview of how this new model will look. This extra style is on the agenda for the new Audi A1, as well as a more classy and more technological interior.
With additional versions of Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta because before A1 will appear, this new model needs to look more upscale to maintain its horse as an elegant supermini. There is also MINI Cooper and next generation DS3 soon.
Although you can not tell the difference from the image, the new A1 will switch to the smallest version of the VW Group MQB platform everywhere, called A0. The transition in architecture also means that A1 production will be shipped from Brussels to Belgium to SEAT’s Martorell plant in Barcelona, where the car will be built next to the Ibiza and Ibiza SUVs, both of which will be launched next year.
The new platform will bring many benefits – the first is the ability to make A1 larger than the current model. Auto Express understood that after a heated debate within the VW Group about the number of wheelbase spinning from a single version of MQB, the company’s top brass had ordered a length of about 2.560mm in all of the upcoming small cars from Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda.
That is a profit of about 90mm above the existing A1, and while the body tends to grow with a fraction of it, the expanded wheelbase should benefit the rear passengers. Boot capacity will also rise slightly, potentially from 270 liters of current cars to about 300 liters.
Our exclusive image of the new Audi A1 shows how the car will look without disguise as well. Spy shots show bigger grille and sporty headlamps, as well as large wheels and taillights that look sharper as well.
Audi A1 2018 engine range
The new platform brings a new engine, and the A1 range is likely to start with a three liter turbo-engineered version of the current turbo, which is growing around 100bhp. With the new Polo and the coming A1 sharing mechanical DNA, Audi may also choose to offer the A1 with a new 1.5 liter VW Group gasoline and diesel engine – although the latter unit tends to appear first on the next A3.
When the A1 gets a new 1.5-liter engine, its output range – from 90bhp to 160bhp – should give Audi enough choice for the entire line-up, except for the hot hatch S1.
There is also the possibility of Audi introducing a plug-in hybrid version of e-tron from A1.Back in 2012 developed a concept featuring three-cylinder turbines and electric motors. However, the technology is expensive, and if introduced, it will push the A1 price into new territory – probably above £ 25,000.However, Audi will provide a competitor for the BMW i3 – a car that currently can not be piloted.
New Audi A1 interior and exterior design
Of course, the new model will not be complete without a new look. Our description illustrates how the second generation of A1 will evolve, with evolutionary and not revolutionary changes.Expect sharper headlights with unique daylight natural daylight on both sides of the company’s newest grille, which follows hexagonal rules on hatchbacks and saloons instead of octagonals like the Audi SUV.
At the rear, the wider tail light tends to be inspired by freshly refreshed A3s, with integrated roof spoiler to aid aerodynamic efficiency and give the A1 a more sporty look.‘Audi scrolling indicator’ is set to be offered as an option across the range.
What tends to be more attractive to buyers is the raft of new technology in it. Cockpit Virtual 12.3-inch Audi will be performing for the first time, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will also be introduced in the update version of Audi’s MMI infotainment system. The company can launch WiFi hotspots and also aims to match the connectivity offered by main rival A1, MINI.
Is Audi RS 1 possible?
The existing car will be a warrior with just a few tweaks before the next model is introduced, but can get flagship sign-off. Audi has fenced off the 1st RS badge, and while senior company insiders have dismissed plans for such vehicles, it may be possible that the company may issue limited limited edition hatchback edition as part of its tail end. Production runs in early 2018.
